The Republican Project and the Scholar Arquitecture During the Second Half of 19TH Century in Campinas: Groups, Projects, and Ideas

Resumen


This research is a part of the history education area, which focuses in educational institutions building’s architecture which had links with the Republicans Party in the end of the 19th Century in Brazil. The research understands the discussions about education in the city of Campinas, one of the stages of the Republican movement and focuses in ideas from that political group, which proposed the building of schools, observing the pedagogical and architectural projects according to the educational and political ideals from that time. It will be analyzed the ideas of education that group held. Analyzing these elements together using the new French cultural history.

Inside this process, this research tried to observe the foundation of Campinas’s Republican Party, analyzing the intimidate personal ties inside this Party, the relationships with the architects and engineers who built the schools and the Republican group who proposed the construction of the schools. It will be analyzed the ideals of educations that group had held. In the first moment, they had an idea similar to the Liberal-Radical Party; one of the reasons for this is because a lot of people from Republicans Party had been from the Liberal-Radical Party. After that, the Republicans linked themselves to liberal ideas, mainly in the USA. These ideas were brought by Presbyterians missionaries who built schools in Campinas using help from members of local elite and German Presbyterians constructors, and also Belgian conceptions of construction, brought here by engineer Francisco de Paula Ramos de Azevedo, one of the builders connected to the republicans. The pedagogic ideas common to the period passed for a lot of appropriations from the Republicans. This group reinterpreted and used those views. One of thematic addressed by the group was a project with basis in the scientific rationality; it included the ideal of space. A new architectural concept was created and developed the school building, into a specialized space linked with educational ideas, building a new identity for the school. This, a new movement was mode for understanding those tensions associated to the conceptions of the school building the implementation, and after, the propagation of the building in the discourse condition. After all, because the school building is considered to have the function in the environment where it belongs and it is used with a lot of ways, it deems to communication and its uses are generated as cultural product. Because of it, the discussion starts with the conceptions of schools and education for Campina’s Republicans, ends up at the consolidation of these ideas in the space connected with the final result going through to the development in to architectural and engineer offices.

The sources used will be newspapers, which show descriptions of the spaces and discourses connected to the buildings, photos of the schools, statutes of the societies responsible for the maintenance of the schools, official documents connected with reformation and space modifications.
