Resumen
The introduction of formal school system and wholesale adoption of curriculum of colonial masters was a subtle approach the imperialist used in the process of colonising Nigeria. This paper examined the impact of the use of school culture in the process of colonising Nigeria. The descriptive survey approach was used in conducting the study. The major question which the study answered was: How has the formal school system established by the colonial authorities contributed to the realisation of their goal of colonising Nigeria? Information used were mostly gathered from secondary sources which include published work of colonial administrators on education and governance in Nigeria, archive documents, written testimonies of some early recipients of missionary/western education. Documentary analysis of the impact of colonization on African institutions of marriage, birth and death rites, value system, moral and religious rites was also carried out. Data gathered from various sources were subject to historical analysis. Findings revealed that education and adoption of foreign curriculum has a lasting impact on the people than the colonial military conquest. Although, Africans countries are politically independent, they still appear tied to the apron strings of their colonial masters in more ways than one partly as a result of assimilation of the values through the process of education. Based on this, it was recommended that for Nigeria to occupy her position among the committee of great nations, she has to devise a kind of education system that is capable of launching her into technological greatness and revive her unadulterated African values and customs.
