Resumen

This paper presents partial results of our research in development, whose main objective is to research, find and analyze aspects about the initial educational formation of Italian immigrants in the ethnic school of the Colonial Nucleus Barão de Jundiaí, in the city of Jundiaí (SP), in the period from 1883 to 1893. The chosen period covers from 1883 - the year preceding the mass immigration that arrives in the State of São Paulo-Brazil, to 1893 - when the law that sets out the creation of school groups is enacted In the same State (Law no. 169, August 7, 1893). The sources used are those published in different formats, especially in books and articles. It is, therefore, a historical research, as to the approach, and a documentary research, as to the sources. From this research proposal, the following guiding questions have arised: What was the purpose of the creation of this ethnic school by Italian immigrants? Has this institution played an emancipatory role in the history of these settlers who settled in the city of Jundiaí? It is believed that one of the reasons for the creation of this school was the difficulty of adaptation of the Italian settlers, especially with regard to language barriers. Given that the ethnic school in question was part of Jundiaí's history, it is pertinent to investigate the objectives of its creation and the role it actually played in the education of those children, in order to shed light on the guiding questions of this work, previously mentioned. The research was based on the theoretical formulations about the creation of the Italian settlers’ ethnic school in Jundiaí, by VINAGRE (2009). Regards the History of Education, the theoretical-methodological framework is constituted by SOUZA’s (1998) and KREUTZ’s (2000) formulations. As such, the specific objective is not only to add knowledge to the field of the subject, but also, among others, contribute to the development of related research. So far, we have as partial results, based on the analysis of the material researched, that this ethnic school, the pioneer of its kind in that city, besides the function of alphabetizing, was very important for the transmission and preservation of the customs and traditions of those Italians settlers who came to live in Brazil, which can be considered a form of emancipation that they found in the context in which they lived.
